Incarcerated lumbar hernia in the Petit´s triangle as a cause of ileus

Abstract

Petit's hernia is a rare defect of the abdominal wall located in the lower lumbar triangle. In about 9% of patients with hernia in the Petiti trigonum, the clinical condition is complicated by the incarceration, most often of the large bowel. Here we present a case report of a 73-year-old patient with clinical manifestations of ileus that was admitted and rapidly indicated for urgent surgery. The surgical intervention revealed incarcerated left lumbar hernia in the Petit's  triangle. The content of the hernial sac was an anatomical part of the sigmoid colon, but with no signs of ischemia. Patient underwent swift repositioning of the sigmoid colon and plastic surgery of the lumbar hernia gate. Surgery had no complication and the patient could be discharged at ninth postoperative day. Presented case report shows that the lumbar hernia (Petit) may also result in ileus and thus may present a life-threatening condition requiring urgent surgical intervention.
